Warcraft Poetry – Part 1

Poetry didn’t really click with me for a long time. I studied it in high school like most did, but it never really made much sense to me. I knew it had something to do with imagery and rhyming, except when it didn’t. I couldn’t quite wrap my head around it, especially what the rules were and when/why they could be broken. Even after the first 2/3rds of college I still couldn’t quite grasp it. Then, in the middle of a literature class (not a writing class) it suddenly seemed to click and I felt an overpowering urge to play around with the imagery and structural styles of poetry.

It was a time when I was borderline obsessed with World of Warcraft and the Cataclysm expansion was right on the horizon (or possibly had just come out) so that places the timeframe somewhere around late 2010, maybe a month or so into 2011 at the latest. Looking back, I don’t know if I truly understood poetry nearly as well as I thought, but I certainly tried… Thinking about it now, in 2016, I find the attempts charming and fun in their own right despite not being sure if they’re well made or not.

The plan was, at the time, to write 23 poems at the time. One for each playable race at the time, one for each of the two factions, and one for the Cataclysm expansion. In the end I only completed seven of them: one for the expansion, two for the Alliance faction, and four for the Horde faction. Below, you will find the former two types (expansion and Alliance), the Horde poems will be posted at some point in the near future.

Flames rage across the warchief’s seat
Seeking to consume all
Desperate citizens burn as they flee
The flames cry out

Winds blow strong across the valleys
Clouds above flash and roar
Storms push warriors from the bluffs, screaming
The skies cry out

Waves rise throughout the lion’s throne
Crashing through the city
Soldier and child washed out like driftwood
The seas cry out

Earth trembles in the Great Forge
Metal cracks, stones fall
Craftsmen and scholars crushed under their works
The stones cry out

The world cries out in pain as
Death takes wing once again
The land dies

For Gnomeregan!

Exiled Ones

Nights long ago and far away
My people lived in peace
We thrived on Argus until the legions
Darkness rose amongst us
The Pure followed the prophet’s light

We fled across the stars to hide
We became the Draenei
We thought we found peace again on Draenor
But shadows found the Orcs
We hid from their wrath, Until he came.

The Betrayer and his pet King
Defiled the ashes of our home
We could hide no longer, fleeing once more
New home and new allies
We must defend the third world.
